Lackland AFB
Lackland Air Force Base

Built in 1941 and named after Brigadier General Frank Lackland, Lackland Air Force Base provides basic military training for Air Force recruits, and is best known as being the only base that offers enlisted Basic Military Training for the Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, and the Active Duty Air Force.

Per the recommendation of the United States Department of Defense, Lackland AFB will be part of the Base Realignment and Closure program (BRAC), which also involves Randolph AFB and Fort Sam Houston. While the residents and personnel will have relocated to Fort Sam Houston by September 2011, it’ll be an easy and painless transition for all who are involved. Located within the San Antonio metro area, residents and personnel of both Lackland AFB and Fort Sam Houston can easily commute to the center of the city for fine dining and shopping, and to fulfill all of their entertainment, recreational, and cultural needs.

Education

School-aged children living in Lackland Air Force Base are given the option to attend schools in the Lackland Independent School District (ISD). Accredited by the Texas Education Agency and located on base, the schools of Lackland ISD include Lackland Elementary School, which serves pre-K students to the sixth grade, and Stacey Junior/Senior High School. Currently, over 850 students are enrolled within Lackland ISD. Colleges and universities outside the base include St. Mary’s University and Our Lady of the Lake University, both of which are in San Antonio. Students and military personnel wishing to obtain a college degree can also do so at the base where a number of universities such as Webster University, St. Mary’s University, and Park University offer satellite courses.
